A Little Bit About… Birch Essential Oil
Birch essential oil is often unfamiliar to people. It comes from the bark of these gorgeous, magnificent trees. Birch trees are native to North America – so it’s the local essential oil for us U.S. folks! It smells a lot like wintergreen due to one of the constituents it contains – the twigs actually smell like wintergreen! It was used to make birch beer, the predecessor of root beer. You can still get the hint of birch from some root beers today. Remember that birch chewing gum from decades ago? The trees can be tapped for sap, like maple trees, and make a thicker, stronger syrup. Native Americans and early European settlers made a tea with it to use for fevers, stomachaches, and lung problems.
What can you use birch essential oil for? Well, I’ll tell you! It is one of my favorites for anything to do with the skeletal system – all bone related stuff – injuries, breaks, inflammation, pain, etc. Remember how good Basil is for muscle stuff (from a few weeks ago)? Well, these two essential oils go great together for all injuries because they cover the bone and muscle parts. Birch is excellent for joint pain and joint issues too. It’s an astringent, so it helps suck the excess fluids out of the tissues. This is exactly what you’re looking for with swelling and inflammation and is the reason Birch is used for rheumatism and auto-immune issues. It’s a great anti-inflammatory essential oil.
Since it helps clear uric acid out of the body, it’s my go to for gout. Gout is a build up of too much uric acid and causes lots of swelling and pain in the joints it’s affecting, so Birch covers all those bases. Of course, you’re going to have to look at your lifestyle too and discover what got you to gout in the first place and clear up some items there to truly heal yourself, but Birch can be a big help along with way.
Being that the essential oil comes from the bark, we know it helps you have inner strength and provides a lot of grounding and centering. Essential oils made from the barks of trees offer you protection and help you create a strong, stable foundation for yourself.
That was just a little bit about what Birch essential oil has to offer you in your journey to heal yourself.
